Maybe someone invited you along to your first Jive Nation class, because they don't want to go alone... or it could be that they already love Modern Jive and decide to share the joy. Or perhaps you found us on the internet when you started hunting for things to do in London of an evening... or maybe you even heard about us by the increasing buzz and word of mouth.
However it happened - it happened, and you arrive for your first class. Within the first hour you are already amazed at having successfully completed two fast, fun, clear and thoroughly enjoyable dance classes - and what's more - you could actually do it! Then freestyle begins - and suddenly you are faced with the slightly daunting prospect of dancing with people, and you see they are doing more moves than were taught in the beginner's class! Don't fret - it takes a few weeks to get comfortable with the basics.
I remember when I was starting out - after the class, even though I was terrified, and tempted to run, or wanting to clutch a drink hoping I didn't look more nervous than a chicken on Sunday - instead I would make myself join in the freestyle, dancing with all the regulars. I would practice the moves from that night, several times through to the music - and I would do this with several different partners.
Finally, I made it my rule to never ever leave the venue without asking the teachers for a dance - this was my challenge to myself - to really step up each week and see if I could dance the moves with my teachers.
Jive Nation Teachers make you one commitment above all else - we never leave the floor and we never stop dancing with our customers - newcomers and beginners are the TOP of our dance card, so don't be shy. But you have to meet us half way, and do the hard yards in those first few weeks and months, in order to get up to the fabulous world of FREESTYLE dancing! Jive Nation will get you there, if you want it!
Are you being your braver self? Get out there on the floor.
Simon
Ps. Special tip - make sure you write down the names of the moves - this is so important - over the first ten weeks you will learn at least 30 new moves, and this is quite a challenging task to recall these when the music is pumping and you are dancing with someone new.. so, put yourself ahead of the game, and make some notes at the end of each class - you will learn (and remember) much more effectively.
